In addition to participating in a dramatic tradition, Caryl Churchill's work engages two philosophical traditions: Louis Althusser's incorporation of Lacanian psychoanalysis into Marxism, and Michel Foucault's wide-ranging investigations of the relations between discourse and power. Of Churchill's work, although Softcops has a direct and explicit link to Foucault, I am chiefly interested in the implicit links expressed through the play Fen and the echoes with Foucault's discourse theories and their intertextual nature. Therefore, this essay is primarily about Fen, and the references to Softcopsare to support the interpretation of Fen. Churchill's dramas intertextualize interpellating culture and/or discourse in the forms of literary and historical texts, literary characters, and interview dialogue. The theoretical allusions highlight the call of culture dramatized in the plays and also make evident the interpellations at work in the play itself.
