In Evaluation of People (Ren Wu Zhi), Liu Shao brought the doctrine of harmony into the study of merit systems. In this opinion, the coordination between the kin and his lieges and the division of work among the lieges are not only fundamental to the overall performance of capability but also essential to the realization of global peace. Such coordination and division reflect the differences and concordances among the distinct factors of an organic unity. There are two ways to achieve the overall harmony; one is “respect” in the Confucian sense, the other is Taoist for bearance of fights and wars.
