Shen Deqian 沈德潛 (1673-1769) was regarded as a successor of the Ming Neo-classical School by most of the scholars of literary criticism and literary history. However, none of them had concretely explored the poetic relationship of Shen and Ming Neo-classical School. In this essay, we will focus on discussing the relationship between Shen's Tangshi biecai ji 唐詩別裁集 and Li Panlong's 李攀龍 selection of Tang poetry in his controversial Poetic anthropology Gujin shishan 古今詩刪, as a comparative study of several controversial poetic concepts from the late Ming to early Qing. Through this study, Shen's reception and critique on Li Panlung's poetic theory is expected to be clearly analyzed and clarified.
