傳統高地訓練的實際效果,至今仍沒有充份有力的科學證據來加以支持,有些甚至仍有許多爭議存在,例如高地缺氧的環境造成最大攝氧量降低,加上運動後疲勞不易消除,無法讓選手保持與平地相同的訓練負荷強度。而LHTL訓練法為最近幾年被提出的一種耐力訓練的新方法,原文為"living high training low",也就是居住在高地環境,訓練在低海拔地區,利用高地低氧的環境,改善運動選手對氧的運送及利用能力,且能在低海拔地區維持正規的訓練負荷強度,理論上可能會比傳統的高地訓練更為有效。
