This paper essays to demonstrate the influence of Emerson on Nietzsche and the surprising consonance between the two thinkers-both viewing Nature as man's moral guide. However, whereas for Emerson Nature is a soothing source of moral order, for Nietzsche Nature is in fact profligate, inefficient, irrational and without moral order or meaning, and Nietzsche would have us emulate Nature and the Uebermensch in his/her "transvaluation of all values," According to Nietzsche we usually lack the strength ("Will to Power") for this "return to Nature." The concluding part of the paper indicates how Nietzsche's philosophy of natural morality might be used in a therapeutic/counseling situation to help people deal with various forms of loss.
