This study presents a novel home healthcare system using the emerging Web Service, Bluetooth, and GSM short message service. We first implement a mobile ECG unit, which consists of a sensor, transmitter, and receiver. After the digitization process, the measured ECG signal is transmitted to the ECG receiver via the wireless Bluetooth module. Then, the ECG signal is passed along the Internet to the remote database of the healthcare Web Service unit based on the SOAP for diagnosis. The patient will receive the GSM short message from the doctor if further diagnosis is necessary. Since the software structure of the proposed system is very easy to expand and maintain, it can significantly reduce the costs required for future integration and development. Besides, the use of Bluetooth allows the residence to escape from the fetters of interconnection wires, thereby increasing system mobility. Experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed system for practical application.
