This is an essay complementary to a former article published by Fu Jen Religious Studies No. 9 entitled “The Knowledge of Religion as Appropriated by Max Scheler”. In the previous article, we have dealt with Scheler’s investigation of the phenomenon of religion as well as its tension with science. Here, we move forward to pay attention to Scheler’s research into the meaning of science and technology. With the insights attained by Scheler, we manage to put forward the following such a definition: Science takes the control of nature as its essence, employing experimental induction as its means, lead to the development of technology as its result ever exemplifies itself with self-revision as its effective characteristic. Schelear makes an emphasizes that the development of science requires the ideal co-operation of all social factors, including the religious factor of one’s culture. Using Western civilization as an example, Scheler stresses the fact that science has benefited itself through the religious reformation in the lower-working class, manages to provide working experience which many match the theoretical speculation of the upper class so as to lead to a positive result on scientific research. Scheler also warns us of the crisis for human society on account of the excessive manipulation of nature due to scientific development. And he recommends that Westerners should listen to the wisdom of Eastern Civilization which is comparatively more spiritual and contemplative in orientation.
