The author of this essay uses his experience in the planning of “The National Motion Pictures Database” to consolidate his point that when building a digital film database, from being subjective historical and artistic meanings and weights should be excluded selection criteria in the appraisal of the preservation value of film archives. Rather, the preservation conditions (including the number of available copies in existence and their current conditions) should be considered as the main objective criterion. If possible, we should try to preserve and digitize as many decaying films as possible, regardless of their artistic or commercial values. In so doing, we will be able to preserve the most varied film culture heritage.
