雖然生態園（ecotope）於1970年代開始被西方學者提及。然而，生態園之觀念卻早在西元前已被發現存在於古代中國，如：先秦道家之陰陽理論或周朝之易經或風水理論等與生態相關之思想。可惜空有傲人之思想，至少在20世紀末期尚無真正的生態都市存在於現在的中國（臺灣-以下均同）。東方的中國與西方在生態都市的認知上到底落差何在？經過資料、文章與古代各家理論的多方收集與歸納分析整理：近年的相關文章已有生態城市的認知，政府單位也有這方面體認；可惜政府主導所有事項，甚至還是依存混凝土來製造生態都市。相對於中國用經驗來衡量自然，西方國家則傾向使用數學及幾何學去證明及解釋自然。另外，本研究也從表中數字資料中得知，當西方的土地大部分為公共建設使用時，中國人的土地在「有土斯有財」的傳統觀念下，大多為私人土地。整體而言，本研究發現中國人擁有想像與忍耐的能力；反之西方人傾向去實證，用更實際的方法去掌握他們的環境。換言之，中國人對於髒亂的環境較能視若無睹，甚至能將深處惡地之身昇華至另一安詳境界。西方人則付諸行動將惡地改造成烏托邦。如此，東方人也許能稱為理想家；而西方人則為實踐家。

It is observed that, long before the birth of Christ, the idea of ecotope had already existed in China. Yet, at least in the late 20th century, there was no real Eco-Town in China. What would be the gap separating the western countries and China on Eco-Town? Through gathering and analyzing those related articles and theories, this research found that the Chinese people depend on the power of imagination or patience, whereas the Westerners tend to improve and use more practical plans in handling its surroundings. In other words, Chinese people can tolerate the real dirty surroundings, and even have an unbelieveable ability to sublimate the Ecotope world. On the contrary, the Western people act to carry out the real ecotope world. Hence, based on the situation of Ecotope, Chinese might be ideologists; the Western people might be actionists.
