The early 1990s witnessed the emergence of disagreements within the scholarly community concerning the periodization of the Liang-chu culture. The debate has yet to be resolved. The present essay discusses the methods and evidence used by Luan Feng-shih to periodize the Liang-chu culture, and does not support the conclusion that “the absolute period of the Liang-chu culture falls approximately between 3500 and 2500 B.C.” The author favors maintaining the original date of ca. 3200 B.C. as the beginning of the “Liang-chu Transitional Period.” The recent discoveries at Kuang-fu-lin postdate the Liang-chu culture, and their chronology is a key piece of evidence for dating its termination.
