The purpose of correctional education is to have the offenders incarcerated in prisons become productive citizens in community and reintegrated to society. Correctional education provided for inmates is becoming one o the major components of corrections in prisons. At present, among the correctional institutions in Taiwan, the drug abuse correction centers established by the Department of Justice since 1998, are the ones that can best carry out the ideas and practice of correctional education. In this study, three key officers who took charge of the Chiayi drug abuse correctional center, which is attached to the Chiayi Prison, were interviewed individually. Twelve incarcerated abusers who were about to leave the center or to transfer to new types of correctional courses were invited to participate in a focused group interview. The aim of this study was to understand the practices and problems of correctional education implemented at the correctional center, and to make further recommendations for the future practices in Taiwan. It was found that organizational structures and management, course design and implementation, as well as recruitment and employment of teachers were all of great importance.
