本文嘗試從現時的一個社會情況—社會學作為一知識體系並沒有受到社會應有的關注—去討論社會學面對的挑戰及困境。對筆者而言，構成這困境之原因在於本質上本應充滿矛盾的實證主義及後現代思想，卻在一個標榜工具理性及追求個人自主開放的社會氣氛下弔詭地產生共謀關係，做就一個將抽離感合理化、追求自利正常化的局面。當實證主義逐漸由一個“狹義的學術知識觀”（paradigmatic knowledge in the narrow sense）轉化為“廣義的實證生活文化”（broad sense of everyday life knowledge），而後現代思潮則從對權力的批判演變為新的權力中心，並做就了無約束的個人追求時，這種局面在在影響著包括社會科學研究者在內的當代人之生活態度。作者認為對這個不在意的共謀之釐清，對於非西方社會發展其本土社會學會產生一個有用的報警。
