運動造成之氧化壓力來自於活性氧物質的產生與人體抗氧化系統失衡。已知一些與運動引起之活性氧產生來源包括粒線體電子傳遞鏈、NADPH氧化酶、黃嘌呤氧化酶的活化。硫辛酸爲八碳硫醇單羧酸,具有脂溶性與水溶性,易吸收進入細胞內。同時因能還原細胞內麩胱甘肽-維生素C-維生素E系列抗氧化物,且能促使骨骼肌細胞攝取葡萄糖。因此,諸多益處使硫辛酸具有成爲運動增補品的潛力。動物研究顯示必須運動介入(運動訓練或急性單次運動)時,增補硫辛酸才能發揮預期抗氧化效益。然而,因活性氧產生會因人體運動訓練程度或運動特性而有不同程度的影響,運動增補時機仍需視條件而定。給予別嘌呤醇可使單次急性運動產生減低抗氧化酶基因表現的問題,突顯相關抗氧化劑在長期增補時可能帶來的負面變化。更進一步的研究仍需進行以釐清長、短期增補硫辛酸與運動訓練介入對人體單次運動的多層面影響。
