帕度亞是都鐸時代英格蘭留學生最鍾愛的義大利大學,也是亨利八世(r.1509-1547)朝策士的搖籃。它具備兩項優異的條件:第一、它擁有開放的風氣與良好的學識訓練,能夠提升學子們的視野與能力。第二、它提供留學生們一個互動的場域,學子們在此建立人脈網絡,互通訊息,彼此提攜。亨利八世在一五三○年代發動宗教改革運動,開啟了英格蘭留學生回國服務的大門。為了解決與羅馬決裂所引發的危機,亨利八世積極網羅才能之士進入政府,獻策應變。具備古典學訓練與國際觀的帕度亞留學生,遂成為亨利八世理想的策士人才。帕度亞學生回英發展極為倚重雷金納德.波爾(Reginald Pole, 1500-1558)的引薦。波爾是具有王室血統的英格蘭貴族;他不僅出身尊貴,並且深獲亨利八世喜愛。透過波爾,留學生們得到亨利八世的青睞,獲得機會進入政府工作。然而,一五三六年,波爾因宗教立場不同,與亨利八世決裂。自此,帕度亞留學生回英發展的管道受阻,帕度亞的留學潮亦開始衰退。本文係以帕度亞(大學)與波爾的家宅為中心,重建此時期英格蘭學生的求學與交遊情況。

Padua was the most favoured Italian university for English students in the Tudor period; it was also the cradle of Henrician councillors. Padua had two advantages: firstly, it was the university most friendly to foreigner scholars, which made it an ideal place for humanist training. Secondly, it provided an arena for English students to build up a network, which was crucial to their advancement in England. Henry VIII launched a Reformation campaign in the 1530s, which opened the gate for students abroad to serve in the government. To face the immediate crisis caused by Henry's break with Rome, the King needed to recruit learned men defending his policy. English students trained in Padua, familiar with classics and foreign affairs, were ideal candidates. Reginald Pole played a crucial role in introducing these Paduan students back to England. Pole was an English noble with royal blood. Apart from his dignity, he was favoured by the King. With Pole’ recommendation, students could catch the eyes of the King more easily. Nevertheless, Pole broke with Henry in 1536 for different religious ideas. From then on, students in Padua could no longer enter Henry VIII's government through Pole's aids; without this great patron, Padua's attraction decreased accordingly. This paper means to reconstruct the lives and studies of English students in Padua during the period; it focuses on the University of Padua and Pole's household.
