Full of vivid animal figures, Albee's plays are rich in metaphor. Applying archetypal criticism, this paper presents a comprehensive study of the various animal figures like dog, cat, sealizard, and goat in Albee's works, such as The Zoo Story, A Delicate Balance, Seascape and The Goat, or Who's Sylvia? It penetratingly analyzes the collective unconsciousness under each animal image, revealing Albee's archetypal animal figures. Meanwhile, by using the animal metaphor to explain the human existence, the paper cogently proves Albee's major critical theme: The false security is a kind of death.
