The report covers the case of a patient who received peritoneal dialysis (PD) for ESRD after taking herbal medication (suspicious Fructus Aristolochia) for nutritional purposes for a long time. He was admitted from Sep. 25 to Oct. 30, 2008. We used "Gordon's 11 items health functional status" as an evaluation frame, through observation, physical examination, and conversation to collect data. We found that the patient lacked knowledge of ESRD, specifically in regards to the risk of infection and potential decision conflicts. We built up an interpersonal relationship with the patient and the patient's family. Through nursing professional knowledge, we assisted the patient to understand ESRD and to accept PD as the treatment of choice. He successfully learned how to manage PD and self-care at home. Patient follow up is conducted via telephone interview. The study reveals the importance of persistent nursing care for patients with chronic diseases. This article details the nursing experience of patient care of ESRD caused by herbal medication.
