Purposes: Unplanned endotracheal tube extubation (UEE) is an important medical quality indicator in critical care units, and the occurrence of UEE endangers patient safety, extends hospital stay, and increases medical costs. Therefore, this study evaluates the demographics and medical treatments influencing successful UEE patients. Methods: From January 2007 to December 2009, patients who had a UEE episode in critical care units at a regional hospital were enrolled]. In total, 203 UEE episodes were investigated using a structured questionnaire. The chi-square test and stratum logistic regression were applied for further analyses. Results: Finally, 77 UEE episodes were extubated successfully. Patients who had a Glasgow coma scale score >10 and T-piece mode treated under a low ratio of staff to patients were most likely to have successful UEE (p < .05). The significant predictors of successful UEE were age, ventilator mode, restraint use, and nursing workforce. Conclusions: To improve successful weaning, study findings can be used as assessment factors to help patients wean from ventilator at an appropriate time.
