在長時間運動的後期,由於體內能量儲存的不足以及腦部血清素的累積,會使得中樞神經出現疲勞的現象。補充支鏈胺基酸可藉由和游離色胺酸競爭同一個傳遞系統進到腦部,減少色胺酸進入腦部,藉此降低血清素的合成,並延緩中樞神經疲勞的產生。然而在人體實驗中,補充支鏈胺基酸對於運動表現上呈現了相異的結果,有些呈現有幫助,有些呈現沒有影響,無論是在一般環境或是熱環境中。雖然補充支鏈胺基酸對於運動表現雖不一定有幫助,但並沒有負面的效果,且對於蛋白質的合成以及防止肌肉損傷上可能會有正面的效果。
