臺灣藍染產業起自17世紀末，山藍、木藍植物是先民蓽路藍縷開發臺灣時期的重要經濟作物，「菁礐」、「菁寮」的舊地名是先民胼手胝足「打藍製靛」的舊跡。藍草蘊涵不可思議的「藍靛素」成分，去蕪存菁奧妙轉化的藍靛色澤令人驚豔，點滴的染料都是珍貴的自然之賜、草木之情，同時反映出「青，取之於藍，而勝於藍」的真髓與風貌。早期臺灣生產的藍靛染料在各地老城古鎮形成繁華染房市集，老鎮的「染坊牌樓」、閩客族群的「青布藍衫」服飾，以及已成為石座的元寶形「碾布石」，充滿人文自然氣息，是臺灣傳統工藝產業容顏與重要文化資產。
