The traditional genre of fairy tales within the realm of children’s literature has experienced a dramatic and radical change in the past two decades. Among these modern variations, there are works introducing the reader with a topsy-turvy world in which the generally-recognized fairy tale villains such as the wolf, the step-relatives and the witch get the chance to redeem themselves from their “innocent” victimization and justify their seemingly dreadful but actually “harmless” deeds. In this paper, six of such contemporary variants of classic fairy tales will be given an analysis and discussion. The Wolf’s Story: What Really Happens to Little Red Riding Hood (2005) and The True Story of the Three Little Pigs by A. Wolf (1989) both provide a portrayal of a blameless wolf serving as the real victim. Furthermore, the loathsome step-relatives in both “Snow White” and “Cinderella” offer their own chronicles to evoke sympathy from the reader for them through Snow White: The Untold Story (1995) and The Awful Cinderella (1993). Lastly, the witches in the early tales “Hansel and Gretel” and “Rapunzel” narrate their favored adaptations in Hansel and Gretel/The Witch’s Story (1991) and Zel (1996). These voices from the dark side break the initial asymmetrical relationship between good and evil characters, subvert the hierarchal structure constructed in the primitive story frame and finally achieve an evolution of the fairy-tale genre in children’s books which invites the child reader to step into these antagonists’ shoes to understand the tale. Through such an evolution of this ancient genre, an alternative reading position can be established for young readers and help them develop critical thinking/reading ability to challenge the dominant ideology inherited in classic versions of fairy tales.
