Thanks to the rapid progress of information technology (IT), the development of information applications transformed from the use of a centralized terminal server in early times to client servers, and then further evolved into the current distributed computing web-based environment. Since the concept of cloud computing was introduced, the use of virtualization and cloud storage has become a mainstream of future IT development by integrating back-end infrastructure with high-speed transmission networks to make the best use of upgrades in personal computer power. Taipei City Department of Rapid Transit Systems (DORTS) also has a long-term plan for its IT operations based on a cloud computing framework to reach the goal of using virtualization technology and cloud storage and establish improved IT applications so as to create a more user-friendly IT work environment for DORTS staff members. This article focuses on describing the development of DORTS´ IT operations, overall IT operation environment status and implementation policies, a study of future development trends, and the drawing up of the long-term IT development plan.
