This research, with a focus on apology act, aims to explore from the perspectives of linguist forms and politeness strategy the JFL learners’ conversational problems and tendencies observed in the remedial work. With pragmatically improper expressions discussed, the research result is expected to offer useful insight into Japanese language education. Two major issues addressed in this research are as following: A. What are the major strategy and linguistic forms in remedial work? Is the form of expressing proper? B. How do the learners conduct remedial work while saving their faces at the same time? The research finds that several features are recognized in the expression forms. Grammar mistakes are not prominent in dialogues in general. However, pragmatic improperness and misunderstanding of linguist function are observed in conversations. Besides, it is found that the speaker tends to keep both his/her and the listener’s faces when apologizing. Similarities and differences in ending of apology are also observed between learners and native Japanese speakers.
