通識教育的精神，在發揚以人為本的理念；通識教育的目的，在培養學生獨立思考、自我成長的能力。是以，通識教育所推展的是全人教育，讓學生知道自己的定位，了解人文精神的意義。而經典名著的閱讀教育，其內容發人深省，教化人心，可使學生在快速多變的時代洪流中，穩住自己的方向，更可提升學生深刻的人文素養。本文透過《簡愛》、《包法利夫人》二部經典名著裡，簡愛與愛瑪，包法利兩位良善女主角，因性格差異及面對愛情衝突糾葛等之處理方式不同，造成天差地別之迥異人生結局為探討重點，提供學生除了在知識的追求外，還能對自己在失去情感後如何自處，有所反省。
