Currently the ethnonym of the Tà Mun people is under review by social scientists. Public opinion has indicated that the Tà Mun should not be classified along with the Stieng or Chrau people as currently is the case, because the Tà Mun language and culture are quite different from those of the Stieng and Chrau. The Tà Mun people are fully aware of their own ethnic identity and have always asserted their own identity as Tà Mun. They have repeatedly requested that Tà Mun be added to the list of ethnic minorities in Vietnam. This article is the result of linguistic fieldwork conducted in late May and July of 2013 in rural districts of two provinces, Tay Ninh and Bin Phuoc. This preliminary study aims to provide further information on the phonology of Tà Mun, as well as a phonetic comparison of Tà Mun and the South Bahnaric languages.
