Shipbuilding industry is a comprehensive industrial developed with the whole industry chain. Developed countries promoted the shipbuilding industry development policy to improve the infrastructure technology, to develop the related industries and upgrade the national defense competitiveness. The characteristics in Taiwan’s shipbuilding industry compared with the advanced industrial countries are that the market share is small, land and labor costs are high. However, we focus on the core technology development and resource planning to enhance the competitiveness of shipbuilding technology. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to compare the status of technology development of leaders in Taiwanese and Korean shipbuilding industry- Hyundai Heavy Industries and CSBC Corporation, Taiwan by using patent analysis. The results could recommend for technology development of shipbuilding industry in Taiwan from analyzing the trend of technology development and the patent portfolio construction in the global shipbuilding company- Hyundai Heavy Industries. Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea had applied 769 patents from 1992 to 2013 and CSBC Corporation, Taiwan had applied 7 patents in Taiwan. Using the cross table analysis between technology efficacy and technical efficacy, the results showed that the patent portfolio in Hyundai Heavy Industries shipbuilding focused on manufacturing process, rigging equipment, shipbuilding structures, propulsion systems and LNG/LPG carriers. The technical efficacy focused on raising productivity, improving propulsion performance, and improving ship structure. On the other hand, based on the limited R&D resources, CSBC Corporation, Taiwan focus on green energy research of propulsion systems, but had not used patents to protect the invention. Finally, the study suggested Taiwan shipbuilding industry should promote the development of green energy technologies and strengthen the shipbuilding patent-related knowledge construction and patent personnel training.
