The literati in Qing Dynasty, if they were living in poverty and suffering the painful failure in imperial examination, could choose to be a "Muyou" 幕友, the private legal secretary, as an alternative choice of profession. Increasing gradually from the middle of Kang Xi period, the number of Muyou reached its maximum at the end of Jia Qing period. It was under this social and cultural climate of "Youmu" 游幕 that Jingzi Wu (1701-1754) composed his Rulin waishi. This fictional novel represented, in a realistic manner, the officialdom in a low position of political hierarchy and depicted vividly the image of Muyou in many chapters. Through an analysis of literary sketches and official admonitions in Qing Dynasty, this paper aims to elucidate the ritual practice of Yu brothers in Rulin waishi, Yu Te is at a low position of literati but with ample experience of Youmu. It argues that "ascetic ritual" 苦行禮 practiced by Yu Te is commendable; furthermore, Jingzi Wu introspected the crux of the problem of ascetic ritual
