HWC Roasters is an emerging specialty coffeeshop chain in Taiwan. In response to Taiwan’s highly competitive coffee market, HWC has invested tens of millions of dollars in the development of the AIoT
smart coffee vending machine (HWC vending machine) as a “secret weapon” for digital transformation.
The HWC vending machine is like an unmanned 24-hour coffeeshop. Its smart devices can calculate
and transmit to remote franchisees data, such as ingredient consumption and the incurred turnover. The
HWC vending machine has thus caught the market’s attention since its launch. Although many
franchisees attracted to its novel technology have immediately purchased it, more are sitting on the
fences and some have even requested for solutions to the machine’s problems in their feedback to HWC.
Despite busily handling a big chain and franchise exhibition at the Taipei World Trade Center in March
2022, HWC’s founder Penny Lin could not take a break. She had a hard dilemma in its way, i.e., to go
ahead and enhance the coverage of the HWC vending machine as quickly as possible according to
HWC’s planned policy, or to pause in order to fix and improve the functional problems, and resolve the inconveniences faced by franchisees?
