The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of using
reflective writing with the I Ching divination on students’ self-
awareness. This study moves from analyzing the structures and ideas
behind reflective writing and those behind the I Ching, to finding
similarities between the two tools, through to designing a new
writing model for students. A survey was given to 59 third-year
students at a university in Taiwan. A total of 51 students responded.
Eight students did not respond so their data was considered as
missing. The results indicate the reflective writing in conjunction
with the I Ching improves self-awareness. Future studies can focus
on different ways of implementing the I Ching and the impact they
can bring to the classroom.
