Infographic is a visual medium conveying information through an intuitive and interesting
presentation in order to enhance people's communication, understanding and acceptance of information.
As a fast-growing issues in the fields of information design and visual communication design,
infographic has been explored by various researchers, resulting a massive publication of rich literatures.
Instead of subjective review of qualitative analysis in previous studies, this study aimed to conduct a
systematic review of academic publication listing in WoS and Scopus since 1975 to 2021, and to use a
bibliometric approach to shape the overall knowledge structure and to master the emerging trend of
infographic issues. Through the data statistics for bibliometric indicators and co-citation analysis, the
three questions would be clarified: 1) the history of infographic academic studies can be divided into:
initial phrase (1975-2006), development phrase (2007-2014), and active phrase (2015-2021). 2) based
on the citation statistics, the important academic journals of infographics include: British Journal of
Sports Medicine, Journal of Visual Literacy, Business Communication Quarterly, and Journal of The
American Medical Informatics Association. 3) five research themes of infographics was classified into:
visualization and retrieval of information, human computer interfaces interaction, communication
medias, education and learning, and medical and health. Overall, the findings could provide a reference
for further study of bibliometrics and infographic, and enable related designer to enhance the application
of infographics with diversity.
