Prior to the public recognition and the adoption of a classification scheme for Chinese books appropriate for use in various types of libraries, an overall investigation including national, public, academic, school as well as special libraries has to be undertaken. Based on two recent surveys made by the National Central Library, the author, after a Statistical analysis of the data collected, is able to formulate a revision policy toward a much more satisfactory classification scheme for Chinese materials. Following this conclusion, this paper proceeds to present to our colleagues the major two topics in subject cataloging-the revision of the Chung kuo tu su feng lei fa and the completion of the newly compiled List of Subject Headings for Chinese materials. Although the revision work of the former is still in progress, the working group is delighted to point out a few breakthroughs in the layout of its allocation of headings and numbers. For the latter, the foundation is laid on the two well established Lists, namely Sears and LC. Since it is a fundamental list, for the time being, we have established some 7,000 entries-chiefly main subject headings, further subdivisions are scheduled to be supplemented later on. Thus, we could only present it as an experimental attempt. Modification for these Codes would be needed as time proceeds.
