Ancient Chinese libraries (ts'ang-shu-lou) are always seen as being conservative and outdated. Whereas it seems that their actual value, status and functions have never been discussed or paid attention to. This article is to survey the collection management and collection use of these libraries in order, through the narration of historical facts to affirm the many functions ancient Chinese libraries possed as well as its status in the history of librarianship.
