This study is divided into seven sections. In the first section I discussed the classifications and purposes of benefices granted by the emperors. From the second to the sixth section I analysed the five different categories off benefices; namely, "Ming Fu" (official attires), "Kung Shih" (bows and arrows), "Yue" (axes), "Ching-Ying"(covering pieces for horses) and "Chi-tze " (banners and flags). From this analysis it is easy to see that the granting of benefices followed a formal system, and it is classified according to the natures and ranks of different officials, The rituals found during the Western Chou Dynasty were both rich and complex. Official residences, ritual vessels, funeral ceremonies, and wedding ceremonies were differentiated according to the positions and ranks the officials held in the government, there fore the benefices granted by emperors differed both in value and name.
