It has become an inevitable trend among the libraries in the U. S. to re-place the card catalog with online catalog, since the library automation isnow being aggressively promoted in Taiwan, whether or not the readers canaccept the above trend remains a question mark requiring further study.Focusing on the question, the writer has conducted two consecutive question-naire surveys toward the readers of National Chiao~tung University, Nation-al Cheng'kung University and National Taiwan Normal University. Thesurveys primarily focused on the readers attitude and behavior pattern to-ward the card catalog and online catalog and also investigated the reader'sviewpoint regarding the discard of card catalog. The result of the surveysindicated that, while the online catalog is affirmed and preferred by themajority of the readership, the card catalog is not so favorably accepted. The readers who are against to discard the card catalog are not because oftheir conservativeness or just because of their pigheaded objection. Thereasons for their objection truly reflect the major problems of the online cata- log system. The writer believes that only after those problems of onlinecatalog system are adequately resolved can the discard of card-catalog beeventually achieved.
