本文企圖從東方的禪、老莊、孫子、柔道和語言特性等哲學面向來理解矛盾療法的本質與精髓，並追溯矛盾療法在西方哲學中辯證的、相對的和系統的思維路徑，以期對照統合、發展一全面性觀點。進而介紹精神分析、個體心理、意義治療、完形治療、行為治療及系統取向之治療等六大學派中矛盾技術之使用情形與理論依據。最後探討備受爭議的倫理問題，並提出個人心得與感想作為總結。

This article consists of three major divisions. Part I presents the philosophical origins and analogues of therapeutic paradox in Eastern thoughts generally and in several Oriental disciplines specifically. It then traces the root of paradoxical strategies in the West by three perceptual vantage points -- the dialectical, the relativistic and the systemetic. Next it attempt to clarify the nature and application of therapeutic paradox from six major theoretic orientations, and suggest the principles how to work paradoxically. Finally, it loctes some of ethical issues which have been raised and what should be noticed within paradoxical therapy.
