In Map Generalization, due to consideration of scale limitation on map load capacity and geometric accuracy of Features, the map shape generalization and map content selection shall be proceeded. The result of such process is called Generalization Effects. Based on this, this paper attempts to study on the impact of River Networks with reference to topographic map published by the government in 6 different scales (1/5,000, 1/25,000, 1/50,000, 1/100,000, 1/250,000 and 1/500,000) and studies the factor of river network generalization. It is discovered from experiment examples that map generalization will influence the number and length of rivers. The reasons of causing this condition, except for map scale, the inconsistency of human factor on selection of features is also one of the major factors. Therefore, this paper engages in analysis of unreasonable phenomena of river networks on traditional manual map compilation and provides reasonable river network generalization method to facilitate the reference on map compilation operation application for our country.
