The computerization of library operations presents a challenge for software users both within and without the walls of the library. Difficult copyright issues arise in this new "virtual library", an amalgam of computer networking, bulletin board system ("BBS") and CD-ROM libraries, for users and developers alike. The biggest copyright issues in recent years have been the counterfeiting and unauthorized use of computer software. For example, several famous United States computer software companies have formed the Business Software Alliance ("BSA") and brought a series of relentless legal actions against infringers and unauthorized users of their software. These suits and other phenomena have served to create great public interest in exactly how to avoid copyright infringement. In response to this demand, this article introduces solid software management concepts for all of users. It will show library how to expand its software usage into the new era while avoiding copyright infringement.
