     超媒體(hypermedia)概念的孕育,可以達溯至1940年代,然而只有在近幾年來,它才在電腦界、商業界及教育界中廣被接納,成為強勢的新媒體。 在電腦界中,超媒體概念首先藉著資料庫與多媒體科技的整合,而得以具體實現,之後,軟體工程師們使用超媒體系統來控制各種視聽設修或建造資訊網路;對電腦界言,超媒體系統是編輯工具(authoring tool)或傳播工具(communication tool),超卡系統(HyperCard)及馬賽克系統(Mosaic)各是其中著名的代表。 在商業界中,許多博物館及圖書出版公司則使用超媒體系統來檢索資料,更多的商業公司利用超媒體系統控制影像、語音的能力,來做多采多姿、五光十色的產品展示。超媒體在商業界中最主要的應用,是做為資源檢索工具(resource tool)或是成品展示工具(presentation tool)。葛洛禮(Grolier's)電子百科全書是超媒體做為資源工具的範例,而許多護立在公眾場所供人查詢的影響導覽系統,則是展示工具的範例。 由於超媒體系統在電腦界及商業界的成功,教育工作者對它寄以極大的期望,越來越多的學校採用超媒體系統做為學習的工具,許多人更認為它是未來教育變革中最具潛力的教學媒體。不過本文要在此提醒教育工作者:儘管超媒體系統具有許多入人著迷的特質,但目前市面上的超媒體系統幾乎都不是為教學目的而設計的產品,一般而言,它們是編輯工具、資源工具或者是展示工具,只有極少數的系統,是為『教』或『學』而設計的。
