This article investigates the different reading of the theory of two-step flow of
communication in the fields of mass communication and information science. The theory has
developed from mass communication field since 1940, but its application in mass communication
has been challenged unceasingly. However, the theory can be explained very well in the field of
information science. The author concludes that this may due to the differences between the fields of
mass communication and information science: the former deals with the ordinary daily news and
message, the latter emphasize the intellectual information for scientific communities.
