With the advanced development of information technology (IT) and with the highly
competitive global economy, organizations realize the existing management ways and working
process are not enough to meet new challenge and needs. To achieve breakthrough improvement as
well as to help survive through in the market, emerging from the late 80's, business process
reengineering (BPR) becomes a new trend toward the solution. IT with its rapidly improving
capacity, quality and cost performance ratios, plays a crucial role in the success of BPR no matter
before the process is designed or in the implementation. This article mainly discusses the
contribution of IT to and impacts of IT on BPR. In addition, several successful examples of
applying BPR through IT in American libraries are cited with the aim to enhance understanding.
