The main focus of this study was to gain an understanding of the frequency of such injuries as well as their the circumstances and causes. The questionnaires were distributed to the entire nursing staff of one hospital (excluding the chief nurse), a total of 1697 people. 95.82% of the questionnaires distributed were completed and returned. After analysis, the following results were obtained: 1. 70.73% of respondents reported being injured by sharp objects of medical apparatus during the period from Feb. 16, 1993 to May 5, 1993. 2. Possible causes of injury included: (1)Poor design and/or poor quality of medical apparatus. A majority of respondents believed this was the main cause of injury from hypodermic needles and glass objects, when attempting to replace the cover; (2) Human error on the part of the injured nurse: This factor varied considerably depending on seniority and rank (p<0.001); More than half of those injured had not taken any kind of protective measures; (3) Human error on someone else part: 21.35% of those injured claimed their injury resulted from someone else misuse of equipment or misplacing apparatus; (4) Environmental factors: A limited number of respondents claimed their injury resulted from inadequate lighting etc. Therefore, suitable safety measures should be taken when using such apparatus. Also, improvements should be made in the design and quality of sharp objects of medical apparatus.
