This paper describes the lexical and semantic influences of Chinese on English texts published in Taiwan's English-language press. While English has no official status as a language in Taiwan, it is a major world language used in the foreign-language press, which figures prominently in representing Taiwan's sociopolitical reality and economic concerns to the international political and business communities. Texts are drawn from Taiwanese English-language news journals and ROC Government Information Office publications. All texts were published between 1990 and 1996, deal with political relations between Taiwan, Mainland China, and Hong Kong, and exemplify the use of English lexical items in culture-specific ways. A noticeable characteristic of these English texts written in Taiwan is their use of loan translations of contemporary Chinese phrases using English morphemes but following Chinese word-formation patterns. The source phrases in Chinese consist of the collocation of a number and a word and are modeled on traditional phrases referring to Chinese cultural artifacts or historical periods. Most of the newly-formed number-word phrases in contemporary Chinese discourse refer to current political, economic, and social changes within Taiwanese society. Direct loan translations of these Chinese phrases regularly occur in English texts appearing in Taiwan's foreign-language press. The results of this study show that loan translation of contemporary Chinese number-word phrases is a productive lexico-semantic process in English texts arising from Taiwan's dialogue with the international community. The analysis demonstrates that when using English, Taiwanese writers apply native Chinese linguistic norms to mark their discourse as distinctively Taiwanese. Moreover, the direct translation of significant contemporary phrases from Chinese acculturates English to the local context and enables Taiwanese writers to empoly it in their linguistic presentation of self as Taiwanese users of English.
