This paper aims to explore the phenomena of rhyming and rhythm in the Hua Jian Ji lyric collection in terms of its relations between verse and the musical composition. The characteristics of rhythm, rhyming, and versification observed in the Hua Jian Ji lyrics are closely related to its musical composition. Nevertheless, the difference in the ways of singing and composing the lyrics has resulted in the complexities of rhythm and rhyming, as will as in the subtleties of its melodic variation. This was in fact a common feature at the time when lyrics could still be sung, whereas nowadays it is said that the versification of the lyrics should strictly match with its musical composition.
