While bus system is one of the major transit systems in Taipei city, it is now facing a serious decrease in passengers. In order to improve the bus operations and traffic congestion in Taipei, the Institute of Transportation, Ministry of Transportation and Communications has planned a grid bus network in January 1995. However, the quantitative performance of this grid bus network hasn't been evaluated in that plan. The main purpose of this study is to evaluate and compare the benefits between grid bus network and present bus network. This study is a "before and macro" type evaluation. Six evaluation indices are chosen and can be divided into three groups: 1. User: average travel time, average travel cost, 2. Operator: average turnover time and 3. Regulator (government): circuity of network, density of network, total cost of bus system. Due to complication of the real network, this study simulates the Taipei case by the package of TRANPLAN. It is concluded from the case study that grid bus network is better and worth pursuing.
