由於地理資訊系統和電腦繪圖軟體的使用人口急速增加，在出圖方面更迫切的需要地圖設計的自動化。但是現有大部分的繪圖軟體，還是仰賴以交談方式來處理，在缺乏明確的配置指導原則下，使用者無法有效率地表達地理資料，形成出圖程序的一個瓶頸。因此有必要將圖面配置納入能自動處理的程序，為達此目的，各圖元配置原則的歸納便成為刻不容緩的工作。本研究共搜集並分析一百二十幅各種類型的地圖樣本，以建立圖元配置原則。 在此研究發現圖幅與圖廓、圖框與主圖的幾何中心位置一致，說明性圖元受圖元配置方式影響，及某些特殊圖元具有出現在某些特定位置的傾向。本文所歸納的初步圖元配置法則，應有助於地圖自動化技術的進步。

120 maps are collected and analyzed to establish the allocation principles of map elements. It is concluded that the geometric centers of map sheet and map border, and those of map neatline and mapped areas are concordant. The study also concludes that the allocation of all descriptive map elements are influenced by the map pattern, and there exist some general tendencies in allocating some particular map elements. All of these preliminary conclusions should facilitate further automation of computer mapping.
