To illustrate passing techniques in soccer games, the characteristics and the Process of "passing a ball" have been studied. The targets of this research are the top four male teams in the play-off matches at 1995, Taiwan Area Games. The passing process is investigated through reviewing video tapes. The validity of successive passing a ball, the number of passing faults, and the number of being intercepted are analyzed by statistics and the following conclusions were reached. 1.Valid successive passing (1) The number of valid successive passing is 431; that means an average number of successive passing in every match is 215.5 and 107.8 per team. The team which performed the highest number of successive passing is Kaoshiung Hsien team and the lowest number is the Tainan City team. (2) Passing balls with one-touch is used most frequently (38.3%), followed by two-touch (21.3%). THe percentage of passing balls with more than five touches is 14.8% only. (3) The results of the t-test show no signifi cant di fferenc es among these four teams (t=0.48). 2.The number of passing faults (1) The total number of pass ing faults is 531; an average of passing faults in every match is 265.5 and 107.8 per team. Among these four team, the Kaoshiung Cith team performed the highest passing faults with 28.6% (2.33+3.20), followed by the Kaoshiung Hsien team. The lowest number of passing faults is performed by the Tainan City team. (2) The time of passing faults mainly is found at the last minute before the closing of the second half, then followed by thr time period of between the 45 minutes and 60 minutes of the game. The least passing faults are observed during the period of the 60 minutes and the 75 minutes of the game. (3) The results of the t-test show no significant differences among these four teams (t=-0.27). 3.The number of being intercepted (1) The number of being intercepted is 299; an average number of interceptions in every match is 149.5 and 74.8 per team. The which performed the highest number of being intercepted among the four play-off teams during passing is the Tainan Hsien team with the percentage of 30.1% (15+4.08). The Tainan City team is rated second highest number of being intercepted, and the Kaohsiung City team performed the least number of being intercepted. (2) The time period of being intercepted is mainly found during the last 15 minutes before the closing of the second half, followed by the time period between 45 to 60 minutes, and the time period between 15 and 30 minutes of the game. (3) The results of the t-test show no significant differences among these four teams (t=-0.27).
