This paper is a part of my study on the formation of a multiethnic literati circle in China under Mongol rule. It is my belief that various ethnic groups in the Yuan dynasty were not as much separated from one another as many scholars have held. By the mid-Yuan period a multiethnic literati circle had been formed. The newly emerging Mongol and Semu literati interacted closely with their Chinese colleagues through a network of social relations and multifarious cultural activities. "Elegant gathering," the focus of this study, was an expression of multiethnic literati circle. "Elegant gathering" had long been a major form of sociocultural activities in the Chin literati tradition. These gatherings were held by literati on the basis of common cultural interest and taste as well as friendship. During the Yuan, there were more and more gatherings of sort taken part not only by Chinese literati but also by their Mongol and Semu colleagues. The three core sections of this paper are devoted to (1) literary gatherings, (2) artistic gatherings, and (3) excursions, respectively. In the fifteen cases cited in these sections I have shown that the Mongol and Semu literati intermingled freely with their Chinese friends and they demonstrated a kind of literary and artistic talents not much inferior to, and in some cases even equal of those of the latter. Generally, this study will help to show that the vast sociocultural gap once existing among various ethnic groups had been bridged considerably the mid-Yuan period.
