Yazhang was a kind of exceedingly valuable jade object prevalent during the Longshan cultural period till the Shang dynasty or even up till the Western Zhou dynasty. It was collect all over in the museums of Europe, the United States of America and Japan. In this paper, a few significant findings of recent studies of yazhang are presented as follows: A.Early yazhang in China can be traced back to as early as the period of Longsh: culture. Yazhang of earlier period were found in Shandong and Shaanxi provinces. B.The style of the Erlitou yazhang from Henan province obviously inherited the characteristics of its counterparts of the past but at the same time bore features which indicated a trend of further development. C.The discoveries of yazhang in recent years in areas outside the Central Plains China such as Sichuan, Hunan, Fujian, Guangdong, Hong Kong and Vietna contributed very important information to the studies on the spread of Shang culture along the peripheral areas of East Asia. For the two yazhang found from Xom Ren in Vietnam, one clearly displayed the style of the yazhang of the Longshan culture, while the other had close resemblance of the yazhang of the Shang period excavated in Guanghan, Sichuan. This reflects the complexities yazhang itself in the spreading process. D.The yazhang discovered in Shandong and Sichuan indicated that they might he been used in sacrificial activities. Discoveries in Henan Erlitou and Hong Kong Dai Wan revealed that yazhang were found in graves and therefore they might Have served as mortuary objects.
