     骨骼肌肌纖維的分類是依據肌纖維的各種內在(生理、生化、 組成)和外在(解 剖、型態)特徵來進行劃分的,一方面瞭解肌肉的性質;另一方面探討肌肉的功能變化和適 應。 肌纖維在發育到肌管( myotube )階段時很細,尚未成熟,但可接受神經支配,此時 若接受快神經支配則分化為快肌,反之,則變成慢肌纖維。當發育到成熟快、慢肌階段時, 肌纖維不再增殖,因此出生後肌纖維數不再增加。然而,交叉神經支配或長期電刺激可使其 類型轉變;且運動訓練不僅被證明可以改造肌纖維類型,而且還進一步的發現到可在肌球蛋 白分子重鏈( MHC )上改變其構造。
