The primary goal of this paper was to explore how table tennis talents have been selected in China. By means of this study, we would like to provide table tennis coaches and researchers who are interested in the related subject with some norms of identifying table tennis talents. Based on literature analysis, we have discussed the method and measures which were taken to identify the table tennis talents in China from 1980 to 1996. After teh research steps of evaluation, combination, synthesis, explanation, comparison and analysis, we have come to the conclusion as follows:1.Owing to more scientific methods of identifying talented table tennis players and owing to the coaches who are more conscious about identification of sport talents, nowadays people in China have changed the traditional ways which were mainly based on empiric to the use of both the scientific tests (such as dermatoglyphics and skeletal-age) as well as empirical way when identifying table tennis talents. 2.To select qualified table tennis players, a candidate's age, body figure, physiological condition, ability for competition, mentality, and sport skills have to be carefully and thoroughly evaluated. Beginners like children 6 to 11 years old are not necessarily required to master sports skills since they tend to learn quickly. They are only requested to familiarize with the ball and coordinate their movements. On the other hand, players between 13 and 14 years old are required to master the sport skills after 2 to 3 years of professional training.
