　　　　　This paper explores aspects of China's regional development in the light of new paradigms of regional development in the industrial countries. While few authors have applied these concepts to developing nations, components of these new theories are nontheless apparent in China's emerging provincial and overall economic strategy. These theories may be yet more useful when coupled with the innovative strategies for adoption of new science-based technologies in developing regions. The paper reviews these issues in the light of two recent reports. China's Regional Development and Policy and Sustainable Development of the Yellow River Delta. The paper begins with a discussion of some of the national and global imperatives for a new strategy. This is followed by a review of the new regional industrial paradigms, and their import for developing regions. Finally, these ideas are related to the contrasting regions of China, and extended to the situation of the Yellow River Delta.
